was formed in 1981 by Executive V.P. Robert Pittman and released for viewing at midnight of August 1st of that year. MTV has been the revalution for music around our country and later on the world. Not only has it changed pop culture as we know it, it's started ground breaking themes seen throughout TV today. In his foundational MTV research, Pittman learned what teenagers wanted: irreverence, zaniness, instability, chaos, a frenetic pace, lots of disjointed thoughts, and in-depth info about music. And so MTV was born, in part, to feed back to teenagers what they wanted. Today, MTV reaches 78 million American households and 264 million households in 140 countries. The planet's biggest TV network has a lock on the coveted demographic aged 12 to 24. In 2001, MTV estimated that there ad revenue was around $700 million. The Real World, first aired in 1992, is one of the first reality television shows to gain a national audience, and continues to be the longest running program in MTV history. |
